C60

Six little machines that make slow music. They all play into one tape, so everything ends up in the same room. Press a number to hear a finished piece, or just mess around and make your own.

Nothing makes sound until you press something. That is a browser rule. Nothing gets saved either, the link up top is the patch.

01

PRESETS

Finished pieces. Press one and wait.

Seven pieces made with these exact machines, no tricks. If a sound is in there, you can make it too.

02

TAPE

Everything runs through this.

Old home studios put everything on one cheap cassette deck. The Portastudio four-track glued songs together and added hiss whether you wanted it or not. This is that, minus the deck chewing up your tape.

LEVEL RMS --.- dB · PEAK --.- dB

Every re-dub makes it darker and a bit thinner. It adds up, so do not go crazy.

03

DRONE

Eight notes, all a bit off.

The whole trick is detuning. A chord where every note is slightly out sounds wider than one that is perfectly in tune. Drag the big numbers and listen for the slow wobble where two notes rub. The .scl button loads Scala tuning files, for when by ear is not far enough.

04

LOOPS

Short patterns that never quite line up.

From tape loops and old tracker programs. PlayerPro ran music as columns of steps back in the 90s. Here each column is a different length, so the pattern keeps changing on its own even when nobody is touching anything.

TAKE marks a spot on the tape. When you save, you get everything after the mark, or the last 5 minutes if there is no mark.
05

PAINT

You draw it, it plays it.

There was a program in the 90s called MetaSynth where you painted sound the way you would paint a picture. Across is time, up is pitch, dark is loud. Still the fastest way to make a sound you have never heard before.

You can also drop a photo on it. Big photos get shrunk first, and only the light and dark counts.

07

MATCH

Cut it up. Put it back by ear.

Modeled on Samplebrain, released in 2022, designed by Aphex Twin and built by Dave Griffiths. Give it one sound to cut up and another sound to follow. It picks the short piece that sounds closest at each step. With TARGET on TAPE, it follows the whole bench.
